About Us

In August 2009, Emily Sheldon and Graham Howes traveled to South Africa on behalf of the University of the Pacific, located in Stockton, CA.  The original intent for Sheldon (Pacific '10) and Howes (Pacific '08) was to present research at a South African conference and travel around the country making a film about HIV/AIDS in South Africa.  During their experience, Sheldon and Howes were exposed to so much more.

About Nkanyezi Stimulation Centre

"The Centre was founded in 1989 by Prisca Tshabalala whose son,
Nkanyezi suffered from cerebral palsy. Following his death, Tshabalala established the centre with the resolve to care for disabled children in her community.

The centre has benefited over 120 disabled children in Soweto and has also challenged societal prejudices and stigmas around disability.

The Nkanyezi Centre currently cares for 30 children, though the numbers fluctuate due to lack of reliable transport, says Tshabalala. Each day, children participate in various physical and sensory activities led by the centre's caregivers. "
